Also known as America’s favorite dog, the labrador retriever has been one of the most popular dog breeds for 28 years in a row. There are various reasons why this could be, but we thought we’d start with some of the coolest facts about these pups.
Not only do Labradors love the water, but they were actually made for it! Their thick tail that’s pretty hard to miss when they’re excitingly wagging it around is sometimes referred to as an otter rail and is used as their own personal rudder (that’s quite powerful too)! Labradors also have webbed feet that help them swim quickly. That’s on top of their waterproof coats that keep them stay content even when the water might seem a bit too cold for you.
Starting out as duck retrievers, Labradors have always been hunting dogs. After these pups were brought back to England in the 1800s, the British decided to continue using these furry friends for what they were good at, and they became gam-hunting companions. Today, Labs are excellent retrievers who are fantastic work dogs in all kinds of environments.
Due to their intelligence, willingness to work hard, and eagerness to please – Labradors make invaluable workers in various fields. Labs are also among the most popular choices for service dog work, search and rescue, bomb and drug detections, and therapy work!
While all three colors of the labrador work equally as hard, they still do come in three different color conformations: yellow, black, and chocolate. While there are some out there that will claim that the yellow lab is the “laziest” of the breed and that black labs are the best hunters, it’s essential to know that none of this is backed by science and is not factual.
Besides being adorable and loving pups, Labs are great hunters and smart dogs too. It’s no wonder why so many people love being their pet parents!
