Hunting Dog First Aid Kit

Hunting Dog First Aid Kit

Keeping your dog safe is always top priority, but with all the hunting gear that you bring along on excursions, it can be easy to forget the most important hunting accessory: your dog first-aid kit! Check out our list of must-have first-aid supplies to save you time and space while hunting with your dog.

Pet-Specific Supplies

  • Pet First-Aid Book
  • Phone numbers for your veterinarian, the nearest emergency-veterinary clinic, and a poison-control hotline
  • Self-Cling Bandage (bandage that sticks to itself but not to fur so as to avoid any sticky situations or painful removal!)
  • Muzzle or strips of cloth to prevent biting if necessary
  • Leash
  • Paperwork: proof that your dog has received the rabies-vaccination, other medical records, and a photo of your dog in case they get lost

Basic First-Aid Supplies

  • Absorbent gauze pads
  • Foil emergency blanket
  • Antiseptic wipes
  • Hydrogen Peroxide
  • Ice packs
  • Non-latex disposable gloves
  • Gauze rolls
  • Rectal thermometer (your dog’s temperature should never exceed 103°F or fall below 100°F) and petroleum jelly to lubricate the thermometer (read how to take your dog’s temperature here)
  • Tweezers
  • Cotton balls or swabs
  • Adhesive tape
  • Diphenhydramine (Benadryl®), if approved by a veterinarian for allergic reactions

Pre-Assembled First-Aid Kits

We recommend checking any pre-assembled first-aid kits to make sure they have the above listed supplies. While they can be an easy, cheap alternative to making your own first-aid kit, it is important to make sure you have the proper items for your specific dog!

Assembling a first-aid kit is an easy way to make sure that your dog stays safe while on your hunting trip. Don’t forget any prescribed medications, and be sure to check with your vet before bringing your dog along on particularly long, arduous trips. Always better to be safe than sorry!
