Camping is the time to relax and connect with nature. It’s a joyful experience, and the one thing that would make it better is to be able to bring your hunting dog with you! These dogs are stepping into the environment they were built for. The smells, the open space, and the constant movement become instinct to them. A good trip isn’t just about letting them be in their element; it’s about keeping them safe, controlled, and bonding with them as they do what they do best. Here’s how to make it a trip that both of you can thoroughly enjoy!
Not every campsite or public land has the same rules for our pups. Many developed campgrounds allow dogs, but often require them to be on a leash under 6 feet. Backcountry or wildlife-sensitive areas can have stricter rules or even ban dogs entirely. So plan your location around what your dog can realistically do, not just where you want to go.
When camping, your canine will be flooded with new smells, new sounds, birds swarming, and squirrels darting. It can often be overwhelming for them. Before your trip, practice hikes with distractions to train them for the new environment they will be immersed in. Reinforce recall and “leave it” commands. Don’t jump straight into long treks; build their endurance! This way, they won’t tire out on you during the trip.
Your hunting dog will need their own duffel bag of all of the necessities they need to be comfortable in the outdoors, just like you!
